This is a question we are often asked. Although everyone has heard about building “green” many people do not relate the advantages of building “green” to their own day to day living. Here at Glassbury Court at Cold Spring, the builders, Wilder Balter Partners, made the decision to take our already “high performance construction” model to a higher level. They made the commitment to build residences to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard in this community.
Making a full commitment to LEED construction is an ambitious undertaking. It requires a lot of training, quality control and buy-in from our construction team and vendors in terms of delivering in five key areas: human and environmental health, sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor environmental quality.
Not only is the Glassbury Court at Cold Spring site beautiful in all seasons but the land is considered a “reuse” as the site was a former gravel mining operation which makes it ecofriendly. We have dedicated 40 of the 80 acres for use as a community park. There is a fishing pond, walking trails with exercise stations, a gazebo and a fenced in dog park. In our landscaping, we have established “rain gardens” that will use rainwater collected on the grounds. Part of our “green” home design process is to specify sustainable products that will either come standard with our homes (above typical “builder grade”) or be offered as custom options.
This means our homeowners live in a prestigious luxury neighborhood where their “green” home is healthier, more energy efficient and provides an ecofriendly environment for residents and the planet.
